Lowe secured his first Gold Glove award last season following a significant improvement in his defensive skills from one year to the next, and this season, he ranks among the top first basemen in the American League statistically

Texas Rangers first baseman Nathaniel Lowe and second baseman Marcus Semien have both been named finalists for the 2024 Gold Glove awards in their respective positions, as announced by Rawlings Baseball on social media Tuesday morning.

Lowe received his first Gold Glove award last season after showing significant improvement in his defensive skills from year to year. Although he experienced a slight decline from 2023, he still ranks among the top first basemen in the American League this season.

The 29-year-old finished second in outs above average (7), second in ultimate zone rating (2.2), fifth in defensive runs saved (1), and fifth in fielding percentage (.995). He faces competition from Baltimore’s Ryan Mountcastle and Cleveland’s Carlos Santana, who are also finalists.

Semien, who won the Gold Glove in 2021 and was a finalist last year, is recognized as one of baseball’s premier defensive players, regardless of position.

He ranked third in the league in outs above average (19), trailing only Cleveland’s Andrés Giménez (20) and Washington’s Jacob Young (20), according to Baseball Savant. The 34-year-old was tied for first among American League second basemen in fielding run value (14) and fielding percentage (.989), ranked second in runs prevented (14), and logged the most innings at his position (1382 2/3).

The winners will be revealed during ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight” broadcast on November 3.

Last year, three Rangers players received Gold Glove awards: Lowe, catcher Jonah Heim, and right fielder Adolis García. This season, Texas boasted the second-best fielding percentage in the American League at .987 and ranked third in total outs above average with 25.
