Five key facts about Rangers starter Tyler Mahle, including details about his injury history

The Rangers brought in right-handed starter Tyler Mahle before the 2024 season, intending for him to contribute to Texas’ playoff push later in the year.

1. The basics

Tyler’s brother Greg Mahle has also pitched in the major leagues. Greg was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American after a standout 2012 season for the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. He was then selected by the Angels in the 15th round of the 2014 MLB draft.

3. Contract details

A large portion of Mahle’s overall salary is set to be paid in 2025, when he will be able to report to training camp in good health and the contracts of Max Scherzer and Andrew Heaney will no longer be on Texas’ payroll.

4. Durability

Mahle, 30, yielded a 3.16 ERA in five starts for the Twins in 2023 prior to his season-ending surgery. He has a 4.32 ERA in eight big league seasons — the first five of which were spent with the Cincinnati Reds — but has eclipsed 180 innings just once. He made a career-high 33 starts in 2021, had a 3.75 ERA and logged 180 innings for the Reds.

5. Still a bit of a mystery for Rangers

Mahle underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2023 and missed most of the 2024 season. His surgery was performed by Dr. Keith Meister, the Rangers’ team doctor.

He made his Rangers debut in early August, but a couple weeks later was placed on the injured list with shoulder rightness.
