While Enzo Maresca’s team performed admirably on Merseyside, players at both ends of the field ultimately fell short.
Chelsea lost 2-1 at home against league leaders Liverpool on Sunday, their second setback of the Premier League season.
The Blues had the better start of the two teams, but they were behind after Levi Colwill needlessly fouled Curtis Jones, allowing Mohamed Salah to score from the penalty spot in the 29th minute. Then, after Jones believed he had secured his team another penalty kick, Cody Gakpo had a goal disallowed. However, goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was called for getting to the ball first before bringing out the Liverpool midfield player.
Three minutes into the second half, Nicolas Jackson broke the offside trap to give Chelsea a superb response. But in less than two minutes, they were level when Jones flicked the ball past an unconvincing Sanchez after an excellent cross from Salah.
The visitors fought for a goal as the irritable match came to an end, but Arne Slot’s team managed to hold on to take the lead, dropping Chelsea to sixth.
Robert Sanchez, Goalkeeper & Defense (4/10):
appeared unsteady in key situations and lacks the confidence Chelsea needs in a shot-stopper if they are to succeed. failed to make a sufficient commitment for Liverpool’s second.
Reece James (7 out of 10):
On his season debut, the Chelsea captain’s quality was evident despite his multiple-month absence due to a hamstring injury. was taken aback by Liverpool’s second goal, but even so, the 24-year-old’s comeback was encouraging.
Adarabioyo Tosin (5/10):
had a poor start after a careless foul against Jota, and his back was never very convincing.
Colwill Levi (6/10):
made a careless challenge on Jones in his own box, giving up a penalty in the first half, but he got better as the game went on.
Malo Gusto (7/10):
connected well with Sancho on the left, but at times it was evident that the right-footed player was uneasy on that flank. made some excellent interceptions and tackles while moving to right-back.
