Fred, a Fenerbahce star, discusses what made him choose to sign with Manchester United over Manchester City

Former Manchester United player and Fenerbahce midfielder Fred has disclosed that he was finally persuaded to turn down offers from other teams in favor of completing a move to Old Trafford after receiving a call from Jose Mourinho.

In 2018, Fred moved from Shakhtar Donetsk to United for a reported £47 million. Mourinho approved a deal for the player while he was United’s manager at the time.

The Brazilian is thought to have piqued the interest of cross-town rivals City as well, but United ultimately prevailed in the competition for his services.

After a run of subpar performances and outcomes, Mourinho would be fired a few months later, but in the summer, Fred and the Portuguese coach were reunited at Fenerbahce.

In August 2023, Fred joined with the Super Lig giants after leaving United as a free agency. In the meantime, Mourinho assumed control of Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in June 2024, starting his eleventh managerial position.

Fred talked about his relationship with Mourinho in an interview with UEFA.com prior to United’s Europa League matchup against Fenerbahce on Thursday.

According to Fred, the 61-year-old only needed to call to persuade him to dedicate his future to the Red Devils.

“Everyone is aware of Jose Mourinho’s accomplishments, so there’s no need to discuss his quality.”

“I am thankful to him since he is an excellent manager. One of the people that helped me move to Manchester United was Mourinho.

He called me while I was playing for Shakhtar Donetsk and expressed his desire for me to join Manchester United. I couldn’t say no after Mourinho called.

“Now that he is here and I was in Fenerbahçe, we are together once more.”
