The Chicago White Sox may not anticipate a flurry of wins this offseason, but they scored a significant victory with their new manager.

They successfully signed one of the most sought-after candidates, bringing in Texas Rangers bench coach Will Venable from Arlington.

A graduate of Princeton who had a nine-season Major League career, Venable has been seen as a potential candidate for a managerial role for years.

He transitioned into coaching almost immediately after retiring, starting with Joe Maddon’s staff with the Chicago Cubs. He then spent two seasons as Alex Cora’s bench coach with the Boston Red Sox, and when he joined Bruce Bochy’s staff in Texas, it seemed inevitable that he would eventually be offered a head coaching position.

That opportunity has now come with the White Sox, providing a much-needed infusion of seriousness for an organization that endured a historically poor season. Venable boasts an impressive resume, combining a traditional clubhouse presence with a modern understanding of analytics. In the short term, he also brings valuable connections that could assist the White Sox in acquiring much-needed talent for 2025.
