Sporting defeated Manchester City 4-1 on Tuesday night, capping off Amorim’s farewell Champions League match as head coach.
Phil Foden gave City the lead early in the first half, but Gyokeres tied the score just before halftime. In a spectacular second-half performance by the Portuguese champions, Maximiliano Araujo also hit the net, and the Sweden international then scored twice from the penalty spot to complete his hat-trick.
Sporting’s victory over City was their final home game before the 39-year-old starts working for United on Monday, so the fans gave Amorim a heartfelt send-off after the game.Since joining Sporting from Coventry City in July 2023, Gyokeres has scored 66 goals in 67 games and is already predicted to accompany Amorim to Old Trafford.
Amorim was directly questioned about his interest in bringing Gyokeres to United following Sporting’s Champions League victory over City.
“I’m not even going to joke about it; I just made peace with the Sporting fans,” Amorim retorted.
“He just needs to stay and finish the season at Marques. Gyokeres is a player for Sporting, which is a great club. He did a lot for it, and he was in the second division.”
In a another interview, Amorim was asked the same question and said, “No, no, no.” Right now, I can’t be humorous about that.
It was difficult for me to leave, and I’ll run into issues if I start making jokes about it with Gyokeres. I will show respect since this is my city and my nation.
“Viktor must remain until the end of the season; after that, he may move on to another place.”
Gyokeres stated of Amorim: “We will miss him a lot, of course,” without being questioned about a potential transfer to United.
“We accomplished a lot together, and while we will miss him and the other staff members, we must move on and take on the next challenge.”Less than a week before he joins United, Amorim was likewise eager to minimize the importance of the 4-1 victory over City.
It’s a little deceptive. “I possess the same qualities and flaws,” Amorim remarked.
We come from a league that isn’t among the top five. It will be different there [in the Premier League], and we’ll have to fight head-on, but we can take the initiative and defend a little lower.
“We don’t give other routes much tactical thought, but winning is always preferable, and people are always more excited to see the coach there.”
Sunday’s league match against Braga will be Amorim’s last match as Sporting’s manager.
