Major League Baseball celebrated Jackie Robinson Day on Monday, and Cincinnati Reds phenom Elly De La Cruz wore custom Jordan 4s with a “JRD” and “42” on them to celebrate the occasion.
During this past offseason, De La Cruz signed with the Jordan Brand.
The Reds are in Seattle to face the Mariners, the two teams for which former Moeller High School standout and National Baseball Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. played the majority of his career.
On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier by making his MLB debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Every player league-wide is wearing No. 42 on the jersey and hat to honor Robinson, thanks to Griffey.

Ken Griffey Jr. was the first player to ask to wear No. 42 on April 15.
In 1997, on the 50th anniversary of Robinson’s big-league debut, then-MLB commissioner Selig retired Robinson’s number. Griffey, who was playing for Seattle at the time, asked to switch from his usual No. 24 to Robinson’s 42.
Ten years later, Griffey asked for Selig’s permission to wear No. 42. Griffey said Selig suggested asking Rachel Robinson, Jackie’s widow.
Griffey was told he could wear No. 42, with the offer also extended to any player wanting to honor Robinson by doing so.
In 2009, Selig announced that everyone in uniform would wear the number on Jackie Robinson Day.
