Especially at Stade Velodrome, Marseille’s home stadium, coach Roberto De Zerbi’s squad is struggling to maintain consistent performance. The most recent humiliating loss to Auxerre put a lot of pressure on the Italian coach and pushed Marseille far behind Paris Saint-Germain, the top team.
Even though Mason Greenwood converted a penalty kick in the 65th minute, Marseille were unable to recover from a three-goal deficit in the first half. De Zerbi had no choice but to take full responsibility for his team’s dismal home performance.
The ex-Brighton coach revealed following the game:
This loss at home is my fault, and I must own it. Clearly, we are facing challenges in this area. Somewhere along the line, I’ve lost my courage and my character.
De Zerbi left Brighton for Marseille in the summer, but he was quick to say he would leave again if he was a “problem” for the club. His words were:
I wanted to feel it firsthand, so I came here. If I am the one causing trouble, I am prepared to depart. I departed without any funds and without regard for other matters. I prefer not to make up reasons or utter meaningless things. Let’s not run from the truth; I’m not attempting to do so.Only one of Marseille’s five home games this season has resulted in a victory under De Zerbi’s tutelage. So, the host team at the Velodrome lost to PSG, Strasbourg, and Auxuerre, triumphed against Angers, and only managed a 2-0 victory against Nice. Marseille fell to second place before round 11 after their loss to Auxerre, putting them six points behind PSG. If PSG beats Angers, the deficit might widen to nine points.
