With Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill playing more frequently than others, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca hasn’t changed up his defense much in the Premier League. While players like Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo have failed to impress the coach and genuinely contend for regular first team football, the players have formed the back four core.
In light of this, the Italian coach hopes to add a center back to the squad that he can trust to play in the starting lineup. Benfica defender Tomas Araujo is reportedly at the top of the club’s shortlist, according to Portuguese publication O Jogo. However, Chelsea will have to contend with Newcastle United and Crystal Palace, both of which are English, for the 22-year-old’s services.
Araujo’s contract with Benfica has an £83 million release clause; however, it is unclear at this time if the club will demand full payment or be willing to negotiate a lesser amount.
Chelsea will need to be willing to pay a hefty price if they want to acquire the player, as it is expected that his salary demands will also be on the higher side.
Araujo will be a dependable choice in the long run.If Chelsea participates in the Champions League next season, it is unlikely that Enzo Maresca will use Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo if he does not trust them in the Premier League. Tomas Araujo has all the necessary skills to fit the manager’s setup, which is why it’s crucial to sign a central defender.
He has an amazing body and is an excellent ball passer. He is a fast modern defender who is versatile enough to play as a right back and who also thrives in set-piece and air defense scenarios. Chelsea can’t ask for much more from Araujo, who has an all-around profile and may be well worth his price tag.
Although it wouldn’t be shocking if Chelsea were to seek a Premier League defender if they were prepared to spend that much money, it will be interesting to see where exactly he stands on their list of priorities.
The Blues may decide to sign a player with experience in the English top flight rather than the relatively unknown Araujo because Marc Guehi and Jarrad Branthwaite may be up for sale next season.
