Reasons why the Texas Rangers have yet to make any significant offseason moves

A month into baseball’s offseason, let’s check in on the AL West. Down in Houston, Jim Crane is talking about having the “wherewithal” to eclipse the Competitive Balance Tax threshold again. In Orange County, the Angels have shelled out $63 million for starter Yusei Kikuchi, making him the winter’s first big free agent signing.

Up in Seattle, you know Jerry Dipoto is just gearing up for his usual flurry of trades, because continuity is boring.

On Tuesday, the club announced its full coaching staff for 2025, most of which was already known. The Rangers had made a couple of hires after Will Venable left to manage the White Sox and Tim Hyers decided to give hitting lessons to the Braves closer to his Atlanta home.

The adjustments on Tuesday were seemingly minor. Dave Bush, who held the title of director of pitching strategy the last two years, will move into the dugout as assistant pitching coach to Mike Maddux.

Jordan Tiegs, who has spent five seasons in working in player development roles in the organization, will slide in as bullpen coach. Brett Hayes, a former catcher, will move from bullpen coach to a quality control role.
