Former Rangers catcher Robinson Chirinos steps in as Orioles’ bench coach, succeeding Fredi González

Robinson Chirinos took over from Fredi González on Monday as the Baltimore Orioles’ new bench coach under manager Brandon Hyde.

Chirinos, 40, enjoyed an 11-season career as a Major League catcher, retiring after the 2022 season with the Orioles.

Over 714 games, he posted a .226 batting average, with 95 home runs and 306 RBIs. Chirinos played for several teams during his career, including Tampa Bay (2011), Texas (2013-18, ‘20), Houston (2019), the New York Mets (2020), the Chicago Cubs (2021), and Baltimore.

His best seasons came with Texas in 2018, where he hit .222 with 18 homers and 65 RBIs, and with Houston in 2019, when he batted .238 with 17 home runs and 58 RBIs.

Chirinos retired from professional baseball in May 2023. González, who had served as the Orioles’ bench coach for the last three years, spent a total of five seasons with the team. Prior to his time in Baltimore, González managed the Florida Marlins from 2007-10 and the Atlanta Braves from 2011-16.

Despite battling pitching injuries, the Orioles finished second in the AL East with a 91-71 record in 2023, their sixth season under Hyde’s leadership. However, they were swept by Kansas City in the AL Wild Card Series.

In other coaching changes, Cody Asche has been named hitting coach after spending two seasons as the offensive strategy coach, replacing Ryan Fuller and Matt Borgschulte.
