Free-agent right-handed pitcher Nathan Eovaldi is rejoining the Texas Rangers on a three-year, $75 million contract, according to ESPN. Eovaldi, 34, is coming off a successful two-year stint with Texas, which saw him rack up 24 wins, nearly 300 strikeouts, an All-Star appearance, and a World Series title.
In 2024, he made 29 starts, finishing with a 12-8 record, a 3.80 ERA (104 ERA+), 1.11 WHIP, and 166 strikeouts against 42 walks in 170 ⅔ innings, contributing 2.2 WAR according to Baseball Reference.
However, Eovaldi’s career is also marked by a history of injuries. In his 13 seasons, he’s only reached 30 starts twice, with his injury list including two Tommy John surgeries and several shoulder issues.
Despite these concerns, Eovaldi’s potential and his championship experience outweigh the risks. He’s shown ace-level performance at times, posting a 2.97 ERA in the first half of last season. Before an injury sidelined him, he had a 2.69 ERA over 123 ⅔ innings in 2023. Additionally, Eovaldi has been outstanding in postseason play, boasting a 9-3 record, 3.05 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 82 strikeouts in 79 ⅔ career postseason innings. His World Series ERA is an impressive 2.89 across 18 ⅔ innings, highlighted by several clutch performances.
Though the Rangers didn’t offer Eovaldi a qualifying offer, there appear to be no hard feelings, as he’s returning to the team.
